The first courtyardhouse in China with German passivhouse standard. The clients wish was to contrast the traditional courtyard feeling with its traditional woodn structure, with a modern bright extension with nice views on the neighbourhood roofs. The couple lived for years in a courtyard nearby enjoying the lively neighbourhood but suffering of uncomfortable roomclimate in the hot summer as in the hard Beijing winters .Dampness and mold in these houses normally disturb the joy of a quiet home in a megacity. The existing building was not reusable. We redesigned 2 houses in a traditional woodconstruction with brickwalls. For the modern extension the limited space made a state of the art steelwoodstructure with no coldbridges necessary. A brickstructure with the 30cm insulation for the passivhouse standard would have taken too much space!  The house is highly insulated, has high quality wood frame windows, a fresh air machine, solarthermal collectors and in some areas the floor heating as a security factor for the peak cold days in Beijing winter. The feeling is very comfortable in summer, no aircon wind, as well as in winter with a constantly nice temperature even close to the big window areas.
